“It’s a matter of how you value your time,” my husband said to me.

We were having coffee in our backyard on Saturday morning, enjoying weather that made it feel more like summer than late October. The roses, begonias and mandevilla were blooming. The sky was blue.

My husband made that observation about time as I was weighing whether to drive to Takoma Park or walk across our neighborhood and take a Metro train. It was a reminder that his good looks and kind soul are not the only reasons I married him. He is also very smart.

This was indeed a question of how I value my time.

Google Maps estimated that it would take 26 minutes to drive to our friends’ house, where they and other volunteers were preparing for the best Halloween party in the greater Washington area. It would take more than an hour for me to do the same trip by a combination of public transportation and walking.

Some people would choose driving. It take less time to reach Takoma Park by car…
