Some of us are looking for good books to read at night, seeking both refuge from today’s news and inspiration for tomorrow.
If you join me in this group, I highly recommend the book “Across That Bridge: A Vision for Change and the Future of America” by Rep. John Lewis (1940–2020).
Yes, subjects that Lewis addresses in the book are upsetting. He writes about violence and oppression he encountered in his life.
But this is a book where love triumphs and the good guy wins in the end.
If you only know a little bit about Lewis, it may be that he was an advocate for civil rights later elected to Congress. Inspired by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Lewis as a young man embraced the concept of nonviolence.
You likely have heard the phrase Lewis often used about getting into "good trouble" to fight against injustice, meaning peaceful but persistent protest.
