Maybe it’s time to pay more attention to a wise Roman’s writings and less to Elon Musk’s troubled Twitter.

Thanksgiving in Miami Beach turned out to be a quiet and contemplative day.

My husband and I started with our usual morning routine.

Before dawn, we made coffee in our apartment near the Miami Beach Botanical Garden, which is home to many butterflies like the one shown above. We took our coffee to the beach and sipped it while sitting on the sand and waiting for the sun to rise. (I didn’t take a photo on Thanksgiving, but here’s a recent one.)

Sunrise on Oct. 24, Miami Beach.

After the sun rose, we strolled from the beach to the pedestrian mall on Lincoln Road before heading home.

There’s a story about Morris Lapidus (1902–2001), the Odesa-born architect who made Lincoln Road a jewel of Miami Beach by keeping automobiles off its main shopping district. While designing a pedestrian mall in the 1950s, Lapidus argued that shoppers should have the chance to stroll, to take their time.
